I’m thinking of starting a website, but where do I begin??!?

Looking to start some sort of website, either a blog or some sort of Q & A forum on several topics.
Is there anyone who knows the best way to go about this? I don’t know how to create my own website or blog site and need some suggestions as to how to get started!
Thanks!

There are several free websites out there that you can use to create a website.

As well as free place you can sign up and create a blog.

It boils down to what you are really loking for.

If there has to be some level of professionalism such as your own domain name and custom look and feel, then you can get a reliable hosting package for $20/yr. Although, you’ll have to maintain your html code.

If you search for free web hosting you will find plenty of options with boiler templates to create a “quick and dirty” site.

If you have specific goals in mind and want to make sure they are met, then you can contact me via email (irishtek@yahoo.com) and I can help you find what you are looking for.

You will need the following things:
    - A registered domain name. These cost about $10 a year, and are available from many sources, including Yahoo.
    - A server, to host your site. There are many available; prices vary depending on size and the amount of traffic. Or, you can provide your own server, but this requires a fixed IP address — which costs extra.
    - Your web pages, which you will have to construct using any of a number of software packages which are available for the purpose.

First you should learn how to make a web site (it’s MUCH to much information to post in an answer here). There are tutorials all over the web. But don’t expect to learn in a weekend – 6 months might be closer, if you have the time to devote to it.

For a blog there are blog sites where you can just click a few buttons and have your own blog. For a forum, phpBB (free) is excellent, but you’ll have to learn how to set it up, and you cn’t pop it onto a free hosting site.

If you want (or need) a hosting site, be prepared to pay from $4/month up. $4 should give you enough for the first year, and you can always buy more bandwidth and/or space later.

If you want your own domain name (not something like myblog.freeblogs.com) it coste anywhere from $1/year (for .info) up. If you rent hosting you’ll need a domain name.

Having your own domain is your best bet. You can create, advertise, post whatever you want.

I have a blog and host others. My blog is http://www.longblog.com . I can help you create one if you want. A domain name is about $10 (you pick whatever name you want) and then hosting is $1.99 per month. You get lots of choices of blog styles, visitor stats, emails, a control panel and more.

Let me know if you want help. jac@longblog.com .
